It is great sadness to say of the passing of Past WCPA president Dick Behnke. He served as president in 1971. He was the son of Frederick W. Behnke who was also a past president of the WCPA. As a third generation family member in the business, he and his brother assumed control of American Canvas Products from their father in the late 1970's. They continued to run the company with the commitment to customers that I call "Old School". Dick retired in 1987 and enjoyed a relaxing retirement in San Francisco's Marina District. He will be missed by his family and friends. The obituary is below.

Photo Frederick Richard Behnke Passed away at his home in San Francisco on April 14, 2009, having celebrated his 80th birthday in February. A native son, Dick was very proud of his San Francisco heritage. Growing up in the Sunset, he attended St. Cecilia's, St. Ignatius and the University of San Francisco, graduating with a BS in Economics. In August of 1950, he married Geraldine Rose Andreini. A few years later, he enlisted in the Navy, attending Officer Candidate School in Rhode Island. A veteran of the Korean War, he was then posted to Hawaii, where he and Geri lived for two years. After his discharge, Dick returned to SF to work for the family business, American Canvas Products. Dick and Geri soon purchased a home in Daly City, where they raised their two daughters. In later years, he and his wife moved to the Marina, where he lived until his death. A friendly man by nature, Dick was always interested in asking everyone where they grew up and went to school during his frequent walks around the neighborhood. He had a love for music, dancing, all desserts (especially cookies!) and his in grandchildren. He was a proud member of The Olympic Club and Marines Memorial Club. Dick is survived by his wife of 59 years, Geri, who currently resides at All Saints Subacute Respiratory Facility as a result of a car accident in July 2008. He is also survived by his two children; daughter Charlene and her husband Michael Ozawa, their four children, Marin, Chelsea, Kenji and Koji; daughter Lynn and her husband Michael O'Callaghan; sister Judy Ivey; and sister-in-law, Lois Behnke. He was pre-deceased by his parents Helen and Frederick Behnke; brothers Donald and Daniel; and brother-law, William Ivey. Dick leaves behind many friends and family members and will be greatly missed. A special thank you to cousins Joelene and Jorge Aguirre for all their help and support, as well as caregivers Leto and Adele Alonzo. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 11am, Monday April 20th, at DUGGAN'S SERRA MORTUARY, 500 Westlake Avenue, Daly City. A private interment will be held on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice by the Bay or St. Ignatius College Prep.
